INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (TXAN 24) — The 2025 AT&T WNBA All-Star Game tipped off in front of a sold-out crowd in Indianapolis, but it was the league’s off-court momentum that took center stage at Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s pre-game press conference.

“From record-breaking attendance to sold-out arenas, this has been a first half of the season to remember,” Engelbert said. “We’ve sustained the momentum—and gained off of it.”

Engelbert praised the host city and Indiana Fever ownership, calling the event the most dynamic All-Star Weekend yet, with activations like WNBA Live, a growing list of partners, and new community-focused campaigns like Line ’Em Up, which brings the WNBA three-point line to local parks.

She also highlighted the league’s expansion blueprint, with three new franchises (Cleveland, Detroit, and Philly) on the horizon. Golden State’s Kayla Thornton made history as the first All-Star from an expansion team since 2006.

Media rights, international branding, and player support were major themes. The commissioner acknowledged recent player frustration around officiating and injuries, promising continued evaluations. On the pending CBA, Engelbert remained optimistic.

“There are meetings scheduled. We’re listening. The goal is a fair deal that grows the game for decades,” she said.

With viewership up 23% and merch sales climbing 40%, the W is in a new era. And as Engelbert reminded everyone: “The fans want more WNBA—and we’re going to deliver.”
