Cumberland Names Legendary East Texas Coach Danny Long as AD

TYLER, TX — Cumberland Academy has officially announced the hiring of Coach Danny Long as the school’s new Athletic Director, bringing one of East Texas’ most respected names in high school athletics back into the fold.

Coach Long’s legacy runs deep through East Texas. He began his coaching career at Marshall High School, where he was part of the staff that secured a state championship in the early 1990s. He later served as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Jacksonville ISD, where he helped develop future college and NFL talent — including the McCown brothers: Randy, Josh, and Luke.

Many of the region’s top coaches trace their roots to Long’s mentorship, including UTSA Head Coach Jeff Traylor and UTSA staff member Matt Turner. His leadership journey also includes tenures at Baytown Sterling (Goose Creek ISD), Tyler ISD, and Conroe ISD, where he helped launch Grand Oaks High School.

While at Tyler ISD, Long was instrumental in the 2004 state championship win at Tyler Lee High School under the late Coach Mike Owens — a moment still celebrated across the city. He also worked closely with current Cumberland Interim Superintendent Dr. David Simmons, who praised the hire.

“Coach Long brings instant credibility to Cumberland,” Simmons said. “He’s not only a proven AD, but an experienced administrator who leads with integrity, energy, and a heart for kids.”

Coach Long most recently served as Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics at Jacksonville College.

This marks a return home for a man whose influence helped shape generations of athletes and coaches across East Texas.
