DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — Two Texas residents who were aboard a cruise ship now tied to deadly hantavirus cases returned to the United States before health officials identified the outbreak, according to reports from WFAA.
Officials say neither traveler is currently showing symptoms, but both have agreed to self-monitor as a precaution. The cruise ship has drawn concern after multiple hantavirus-related illnesses and deaths were connected to passengers on board.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially deadly virus typically spread through contact with infected rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. Early symptoms can include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can rapidly progress into life-threatening respiratory complications.
Health officials emphasized there is currently no indication the two Texans are infected, but monitoring is being conducted out of caution due to the virus’s incubation period.
Authorities continue investigating how exposure may have occurred aboard the vessel while working to identify and notify additional passengers who may have been at risk.
The outbreak has raised concerns nationwide as public health agencies track potential exposures tied to the cruise.
