ATHENS, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Area Round of the UIL Girls Basketball Playoffs brought a physical, defensive battle between Longview and DeSoto at Athens High School, but it was DeSoto who made the decisive plays when it mattered most.

DeSoto edged ahead 13-11 at the end of the first quarter after Chloe Stigler knocked down a clutch three-pointer to close the period. Both teams traded buckets early, battling through tight defense and limited clean looks at the rim.

In the second quarter, Longview struggled to find rhythm. Unforced turnovers began to mount, fueling DeSoto’s momentum and energizing their bench. The Lady Eagles capitalized, building a six-point cushion in the final minutes of the half and heading into the locker room with a 22-18 advantage.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. DeSoto came out aggressive on both ends of the floor, putting together a dominant 17-4 run. Longview had difficulty breaking through the Eagles’ pressure defense, and by the end of the period, DeSoto had stretched the lead to 39-21.
In the fourth, DeSoto managed the clock, controlled possession, and protected the paint to seal the win. With the victory, the Lady Eagles claim the Area Championship and move one step closer to a state title run.
