TEXAS (TXAN 24) — Texas has landed in the top 10 U.S. states with the highest rate of internet fraud, according to a new study by the Simmrin Law Group.
The analysis, based on data from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) between 2020 and 2024, ranked Texas ninth for internet fraud complaints, with an average of 1,165.8 cases per 100,000 residents. That’s nearly 15% higher than the national average of 1,016.92.
The Lone Star State reported a total of 464,703 fraud cases in 2024 alone, its highest count during the five-year span. In contrast, 2020 saw the fewest reports, with 274,105 complaints filed.
A spokesperson for Simmrin Law Group said:
“The high rate of IT fraud in Texas raises serious concerns about digital security and consumer protection. These elevated levels of fraud can lead to identity theft, financial hardship, and ongoing stress for affected individuals.”
To address the growing problem, the study recommends investment in cybersecurity infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and closer cooperation between local authorities and tech providers.
The findings reflect a broader national trend of rising online scams, phishing attempts, and identity theft—prompting renewed calls for digital literacy and stronger fraud protections at both the state and federal levels.
