TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) – A new study shows Texas homeowners are paying some of the highest insurance premiums in the nation, with the Lone Star State ranking fourth overall.
The analysis, conducted by H&P Law using data from the Insurance Information Institute, reviewed homeowner insurance premiums from 2017 to 2021 across all 50 states. Texans paid an average annual premium of $1,995 during that period—64% higher than the national average of $1,213.
Premiums in Texas peaked in 2021 at $2,146, while the lowest reported was $1,893 in 2017. Experts point to severe weather, natural disasters, rising property values, and state regulations as key factors driving up costs.
“This elevated premium is often influenced by risk factors including severe weather events, natural disasters, property values, and state insurance regulations,” an H&P Law spokesperson explained. “When insurance costs rise, homeowners face increased financial burdens on top of their mortgage payments.”
The study suggests that homeowners could lower premiums by bundling policies, upgrading home security, raising deductibles, and comparing rates across providers. On a broader scale, experts say state officials may need to consider reforms and disaster mitigation incentives to ease the financial strain.
With Texas continuing to see more intense storms and rising home values, the pressure on household budgets is unlikely to ease anytime soon.
