AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Texas Open Data Portal has surpassed 2 million downloads in 2026, showing a dramatic increase in public use of government data across Texas residents.

According to information provided by the state, the portal recorded approximately 29,000 downloads in 2022. The jump to more than 2 million downloads represents an increase of nearly 6,800% over four years.

State officials say the growth reflects rising demand for public access to government information as more Texans use digital tools to find data without filing formal information requests.

The portal allows users to access datasets from participating state agencies covering topics such as transportation, public safety, health, natural resources, and government operations. Officials also say expanded agency participation has increased the amount of information available while helping reduce the number of Public Information Requests submitted to state agencies.

Supporters of the platform say greater access to public data promotes transparency, encourages innovation, and enables businesses, researchers, journalists, and residents to make more informed decisions using state-generated information.

The Texas Open Data Portal continues to expand its collection of datasets as agencies add new information and update existing records.
