Texas Leads Nation with More Than 5 Million Residents without Health Insurance

AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas has the highest percentage of residents without health insurance in the nation, according to a new 50-state analysis from High Rise Financial.

The analysis found that 16.53% of Texans lack health insurance, representing approximately 5.02 million people. That figure is 126% higher than the national average of 7.31%.

Oklahoma ranked second at 11.78%, meaning Texas’ uninsured rate is nearly 40% higher than its neighboring state. Georgia ranked third at 11.60%, followed by Nevada at 10.96% and Florida at 10.94%.

High Rise Financial said the number of uninsured Texans has also increased, rising from approximately 4.87 million in the previous period to more than 5.1 million in the latest figures cited in the analysis.

The financial consequences can be significant for people involved in accidents who do not have health insurance. Medical expenses following an accident can include emergency treatment, hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation and other ongoing care.

Texas’ uninsured rate is nearly seven times higher than Massachusetts, which had the nation’s lowest rate at 2.48%.

Other states among the 10 highest uninsured rates were Wyoming at 10.53%, Mississippi at 10.33%, Alaska at 10.25%, Arizona at 10% and Tennessee at 9.37%.

The analysis comes as medical costs continue to be a major financial concern for Americans, particularly for individuals who lack insurance coverage or have limited financial resources.

High Rise Financial said its analysis examined uninsured rates across all 50 states and provided additional data on the number of residents without coverage.

For Texas, the findings highlight the scale of the state’s uninsured population and the potential financial exposure residents face when unexpected medical expenses arise.
