Texas Among Deadliest States for Hit-and-Run Crashes

TEXAS (TXAN 24) — Texas ranks among the most dangerous states in the nation for fatal hit-and-run crashes, according to new data highlighting a persistent roadway safety issue.

Between 2020 and 2024, the state recorded approximately 1,638 hit-and-run deaths, averaging more than 300 fatalities each year. That total is the second highest in the country, trailing only California.

When adjusted for population, Texas reports a rate of 1.09 fatal hit-and-run incidents per 100,000 residents, ranking eighth nationally. The rate is significantly higher than the national average and far exceeds states with the lowest levels of these incidents.

Safety experts say hit-and-run crashes present unique challenges, as drivers who flee the scene delay emergency response and reduce victims’ chances of survival.

The data underscores ongoing concerns about driver behavior, enforcement, and accountability. Officials continue to stress the importance of remaining at crash scenes and reporting incidents immediately.

As Texas continues to see high traffic volumes and population growth, addressing hit-and-run incidents remains a critical component of improving overall roadway safety across the state.
