RUSK, Texas (TXAN 24) — A reported threat involving Rusk Independent School District prompted a multi-agency response Wednesday, but authorities now say there was no danger to students or staff.

According to the Rusk Police Department, Cherokee County Dispatch received a call on April 15 from an individual claiming a threat had been made by someone believed to be in the Dallas area. Out of caution, law enforcement agencies quickly coordinated to assess the situation and secure all campuses.

During the investigation, officers identified and located the person who made the initial call and took them into custody. After conducting interviews, officials determined the report stemmed from a mental health-related concern.

Authorities, working alongside agencies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, also located and interviewed the individual referenced in the report. Investigators concluded there was no imminent threat to the schools or the community.

Officials emphasized the incident is isolated and not connected to recent situations reported in nearby East Texas communities. All Rusk ISD campuses have since been cleared and are no longer under secure status.

The department credited the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their coordinated response.

Law enforcement also praised district staff for quickly implementing safety protocols to protect students and personnel.
