GRAPELAND, Texas (TXAN 24) — After a three-year renovation, one of East Texas’s most scenic and historic destinations is ready to welcome visitors once again. Mission Tejas State Park will officially celebrate its Grand Reopening on Saturday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., inviting families, outdoor enthusiasts, and history lovers to explore the park’s refreshed trails and facilities.
The park, which spans over 660 acres, preserves the site of the first Spanish mission in Texas and serves as a living window into the state’s early frontier history. With mature pine forests, winding hiking trails, and a deep sense of tranquility, Mission Tejas has long been considered one of East Texas’s hidden gems.
Visitors attending the reopening will get a firsthand look at several exciting updates, including newly displayed historical tools and artifacts donated by Stephen F. Austin State University, and numerous park improvements completed through a collaboration between TXDOT and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The event will also introduce the park’s new superintendent, Josh Diamond, who brings a passion for hiking, history, and outdoor exploration to his role.
“We would absolutely be honored to see our neighbors, friends, and families join us,” said Park Ranger Linda. “If you come out, please introduce yourself to Superintendent Josh Diamond—he loves meeting visitors who share a love for nature and history.”
