NACOGDOCHES, Texas (TXAN 24) — An East Texas county is leading the state in pedestrian fatalities, according to a new study examining crash data across all 254 counties.

Nacogdoches County recorded the highest pedestrian death rate in Texas at 6.11 fatalities per 100,000 residents. The findings are based on data collected between 2019 and 2023 and highlight a growing safety concern for people on foot.

Other counties ranking near the top include Gregg and Chambers counties, both reporting rates above five deaths per 100,000 residents. Researchers say the issue is not limited to rural areas, as several larger counties also appear in the top ten.

Statewide, Texas recorded hundreds of pedestrian deaths in recent years, even as overall numbers showed a slight decline. Experts point to factors such as speeding, distracted driving, and limited pedestrian infrastructure as key contributors.

The study suggests that without targeted , including safer road design and stronger enforcement, pedestrian risks will remain high.

Officials say addressing the issue will require coordinated efforts at both the local and state level to better protect those traveling outside of vehicles.
