ROUND ROCK, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Round Rock Express edged the El Paso Chihuahuas 10-9 in a back-and-forth battle Thursday night at Dell Diamond, taking the early series lead.
El Paso jumped out fast, plating three runs in the second inning behind a two-run homer from Mason McCoy. They extended the lead to 6-2 in the third, capitalizing on walks and timely hitting.
Round Rock responded immediately with a five-run third inning, highlighted by a costly El Paso error in right field that cleared the bases. RBI hits from Richie Martin and others flipped the score to 7-6, giving the Express momentum they wouldn’t fully relinquish.
The E-Train added insurance in the fourth on a two-run double from Trevor Hauver and later got a solo home run from Martin in the seventh—his second long ball of the season.
El Paso made things interesting late, pulling within one in the eighth after McCoy’s second homer of the night. But left-hander Robby Ahlstrom shut the door, retiring six straight to secure the save.
Offensively, Round Rock finished with 10 hits, continuing a recent surge at the plate. The Express are now 5-2 this season when recording double-digit hits.
The two teams continue their series Friday night in Round Rock.
