Rockets Dominate Mavericks In Season Opener Behind Durant’s 30 Points

HOUSTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Houston Rockets opened the 2026-27 NBA regular season with a statement victory Wednesday night, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 120-100 at Toyota Center.
Kevin Durant led Houston with 30 points, while Jabari Smith Jr. contributed 25 points and Alperen Şengün finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The Rockets showcased their offensive depth and defensive intensity against a Dallas team beginning a new chapter under head coach Dusty May.
Houston seized control early, building a commanding 70-38 halftime advantage. The Rockets capitalized on Dallas turnovers, generating 20 fast-break points and consistently putting pressure on the Mavericks’ defense.
The victory offered an encouraging start for a Houston roster combining established stars with a developing young core. Durant’s scoring ability, Şengün’s inside presence and Smith’s offensive production gave the Rockets multiple ways to attack.
Dallas faced an uphill battle after its difficult first half. The Mavericks entered the season with heightened attention surrounding second-year star Cooper Flagg and the return of veteran guard Kyrie Irving, who was playing his first regular-season game since March 2025.
For Houston, the opening-night performance provided an early indication of the team’s potential as it pursues a deeper postseason run. The Rockets will look to maintain that momentum when they face the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.
The Mavericks will continue their road trip Friday against the Indiana Pacers as they work to build chemistry and establish consistency early in the season.
