TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas has relatively permissive gun laws. People 21+ can carry a handgun openly or concealed without a permit in most places.
The state recognizes the Castle Doctrine and Stand Your Ground principles, meaning there’s generally no duty to retreat before using force in self-defense where you are lawfully present, and you can use force to defend home, vehicle, or workplace against unlawful entry or threats.
Local governments can’t impose stricter firearms restrictions than the state.
