San Antonio River Walk Area Seeing Major Wave of Development Projects

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (TXAN 24) — A series of major development projects are reshaping the area surrounding the San Antonio River Walk as city leaders and private developers push forward with plans aimed at expanding tourism, housing and downtown economic activity.

One of the largest projects underway is the redevelopment of the historic Lone Star Brewery property. Developers are transforming more than 70 acres into a pedestrian-friendly district featuring apartments, hotels, restaurants, retail space and entertainment venues. Officials say the project is expected to better connect downtown San Antonio with Southtown and the Mission Reach corridor.

Another major project includes the renovation of Lavita Assembly Hall, where developers are investing approximately $30 million to convert the historic building into a 45,000-square-foot food hall overlooking the River Walk. Plans include multiple eateries, gathering spaces and what developers describe as the largest patio along the River Walk.

The City of San Antonio is also continuing its broader River Walk Strategic Plan, focused on upgraded lighting, improved navigation systems, expanded public amenities and additional family-friendly spaces throughout downtown.

Meanwhile, ongoing capital improvement projects include ADA accessibility upgrades, sidewalk reconstruction and elevator improvements near St. Mary’s Street and the International Center area.

City leaders say additional momentum is being generated by discussions surrounding “Project Marvel,” a proposed multibillion-dollar downtown redevelopment effort that could potentially include a new arena for the San Antonio Spurs and surrounding mixed-use development.

Officials believe the combined projects could significantly reshape downtown San Antonio over the next decade while strengthening tourism and economic growth throughout the region.
