SpaceX Targeting May 15 for Next Starship Test Flight

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (TXAN 24) — SpaceX is reportedly targeting May 15 for the next test flight of its Starship rocket system from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas.

The mission would mark the 12th overall Starship flight test, but the first launch featuring the company’s upgraded “Version 3” configuration of the massive rocket system. The updated design is expected to deliver increased power, efficiency and performance as SpaceX continues advancing long-term plans for lunar and Mars missions.

The company cleared a major milestone Thursday after successfully conducting a static-fire test of Starship’s Super Heavy booster at Starbase near Brownsville. During the test, all 33 Raptor engines ignited while the booster remained secured to the launch pad.

SpaceX officials have not publicly announced a final launch window, though aviation notices and testing activity suggest preparations are accelerating ahead of a possible mid-May liftoff.

The Starbase program has transformed the Brownsville region into one of the nation’s most closely watched aerospace hubs, attracting tourists, engineers and space enthusiasts from across the country. Local businesses often experience major surges in traffic during launch weeks as visitors gather along the Texas Gulf Coast to watch test flights.

Federal regulators must still complete final reviews and approvals before the launch can officially proceed.
