UNITED STATES (TXAN 24) — Millions of Americans may be ignoring early signs of hearing loss, often mistaking the symptoms for stress, fatigue, or normal aging.

According to data cited by hearing care experts, roughly 4 in 5 people who could benefit from hearing aids are not using them—allowing symptoms to go unnoticed and untreated.

Jenn Schumacher, an audiologist with ReSound, says one of the most common early warning signs is difficulty following conversations in noisy environments. Many people assume others are mumbling, when in reality the brain is struggling to filter speech from background noise.

Another overlooked sign is fatigue after social interactions. Experts say the brain works harder to “fill in the gaps” when hearing declines, leading to what’s known as listening fatigue—often accompanied by headaches and irritability.

Balance issues can also be connected. Because hearing and balance both rely on the inner ear, symptoms like dizziness or vertigo may signal an underlying hearing problem.

Some people may begin avoiding social situations altogether, withdrawing from conversations due to frustration or embarrassment—something experts warn can impact mental health over time.

Health professionals stress that early intervention is key. Hearing tests are quick and painless, and modern hearing aids have become more advanced and discreet.

Experts say recognizing the signs early can improve communication, reduce fatigue, and help people stay engaged in daily life.
