FORT WORTH, Texas (TXAN 24) - This weekend marks one of the biggest weekends of the winter season for high school cheerleaders in Texas. Dozens of East Texas cheer teams are traveling to the UIL Spirit State Championships at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, January 15–17.
The event brings together hundreds of high school squads from all corners of the state to compete in crowd leading, fight song and band chant performances. Teams from Class 1A through 6A—including many representing East Texas districts—will take the mat to show off months of preparation, precision stunts, and spirited routines. Conference competitions kick off Thursday, with smaller-school divisions and coed squads on stage, while larger division finals and bigger group performances are slated through Saturday.
For many of these student-athletes, simply qualifying for UIL Spirit State is a milestone. Local squads have traditionally battled through tough district and area meets to earn their spots, and this year’s field is expected to be as competitive as ever. Fans and families planning to attend can enjoy packed sessions each day; digital tickets are available, and the competition is also streamed live online for remote supporters.
Keep an eye on your favorite East Texas teams—whether they’re aiming for finals in their division or adding another unforgettable roar to their season, this weekend is a celebration of school spirit, athleticism and community pride.
