SAN ANTONIO, Texas (TXAN 24) - Thursday evening the UIL State Girls Basketball Championships continued in San Antonio at the Alamodome with a match up between Panhandle and Mason in the class 2A-D1.
The Panhandle Pantherettes are the team that traveled the furthest to get here with nearly an eight hours drive from the Alamodome and their high school campus. That distance of travel seemed to have little to no effect on this ball club, or their fan base as they jumped out to a 19-2 lead over the Mason Cowgirls in the first quarter. With a rowdy crowd totaling in the several hundreds, the Pandhandle team gave all who made the trek to San Antonio on their behalf something to cheer for.
Mason and their fans, who outnumbered Panhandle, were determined to chip away at that enormous lead and make this a contest. By half time they got the game to a manageable deficit. Panhandle enjoyed a ten point lead, 25-15, in-large part due to #22 guard Riley Segura's eleven first half points.
The third quarter had a different air about it and Mason began to build momentum slowly and gradually. This was the tone of the second half until suddenly Panhandle only held a four point lead with just over five minutes remaining in the State Game.
The Pantherettes nursed that lead with a friendly game of keep away and Mason was forced to foul and send them to the charity stripe where they clinched this game.
Final Score:
Panhandle - 38
Mason - 25
