LIPAN, Texas (TXAN 24) — The search for world champion bull Hugh has come to a tragic end.
After nearly two weeks of searching, Hugh’s owners confirmed that the prized bull was not missing, but deceased.
According to the owners, Hugh was shot and killed by Dylan Shelton of Checotah, Oklahoma.
They allege the bull was later hung from a tree to decompose, with Shelton allegedly stating he intended to keep the skull as a trophy.
The property owner where the incident reportedly occurred retained possession of Hugh’s skull and has since returned it to Hugh’s owners, who say they are grateful for the cooperation.

The owners further allege Shelton has a pattern of making false statements and mishandling animals, and they are publicly warning others to avoid conducting business with him. They claim some animals Shelton previously used or transported were not his to sell or represent and are now back in their possession.
At this time, it is unclear whether charges have been filed. TXAN 24 News will reach out to local authorities for comment and confirmation regarding any ongoing investigation.
Hugh was a world champion bull whose impact extended beyond the arena. His owners say his offspring are set to debut this month and will carry on his legacy.
“May Hugh be remembered for the legend that he was,” the owners said.
This is a developing story.
