AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) - From 1836 to 1845, Texas operated as an independent nation—the Republic of Texas. After winning independence from Mexico, Texans elected Sam Houston as president and even established their own currency, postal system, and navy.
This bold experiment in self-rule came with challenges, including mounting debt and threats from Mexico. In 1845, Texas voluntarily joined the United States, becoming the 28th state.
That independent streak is still a major part of Texas identity.
The phrase “Six Flags Over Texas” refers to the six nations that have governed the region—Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States.
