TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Tyler Police Department has released body camera footage following a violent altercation on Sunday, May 11, involving a suspect now facing multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer.
Officers responded around 2:09 p.m. to a reported theft at Dollar General on Gentry Parkway. When police located two suspects nearby, one complied with detention orders, but the second—identified as 27-year-old Brianna Erwin—refused and began to walk away.
According to police, Erwin resisted arrest and during a physical struggle, she gained control of an officer’s firearm, firing a shot. In response, officers used a closed-hand strike to subdue her without resorting to deadly force. She was quickly taken into custody.
While detained, Erwin claimed to be pregnant. Paramedics from Tyler Fire Department evaluated her on scene, and she was later assessed again at the Smith County Jail.
Erwin is now charged with:
Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon (warrant)
Two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant
Possession of a Controlled Substance
Resisting Arrest
Evading Detention
Harassment of a Public Servant
Additional charges related to the initial theft remain under investigation.
Tyler Police stated that the department remains committed to transparency and will release more information as it becomes available.
