USA Football named Governing Body for the Sport for of 2028 Olympics

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (TXAN 24) — In a groundbreaking move, USA Football has officially been recognized by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) as the National Governing Body (NGB) for American football. This historic designation makes USA Football the sport’s first NGB and positions it to lead the charge as men’s and women’s flag football prepare for their Olympic debut at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

As the certified NGB, USA Football will oversee national team selection, training, and competition in both flag and tackle football. The organization’s mission includes expanding football opportunities across all levels—supporting youth development, high school programs, and gender equity through initiatives like girls’ flag football, now sanctioned in 14 states.

“This is a tremendous honor and responsibility,” said USA Football CEO Scott Hallenbeck. “We’re proud to represent American football on the world stage and to inspire future generations of athletes.”

Team USA quarterbacks Darrell “Housh” Doucette and Vanita Krouch both praised the moment as a game-changer, especially for women and youth athletes.

The announcement also aligns with the NCAA’s exploration of women’s flag football as an emerging sport, reinforcing the game’s growing national and global footprint.
