AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — Motor vehicle thefts across Texas saw a notable decline in 2025, but the state remains one of the hardest-hit in the nation by total volume.

New data shows Texas recorded 78,495 vehicle thefts in 2025, down from 103,795 in 2024 — a 24.4% decrease year-over-year. The drop reflects a broader national trend, with several high-population states reporting double-digit declines.

Despite the improvement, Texas still ranks second in the country for total vehicle thefts, trailing only California. The high ranking is largely tied to population size and major metro areas like Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, and San Antonio, where theft rates tend to be higher.

Law enforcement agencies across the state have increased focus on organized theft rings, while automakers have rolled out enhanced anti-theft technology. Public awareness campaigns urging drivers to lock vehicles and avoid leaving keys or valuables inside have also played a role.

Even with the decline, officials warn the issue is far from resolved. The sheer number of incidents keeps Texas at the center of the national conversation on auto theft, with authorities continuing efforts to push numbers down further heading into 2026.
