DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas ranks third among U.S. states with the most favorable conditions for mosquito activity, according to a new study by Mad Barn.
Researchers analyzed all 48 contiguous states using average summer rainfall, temperature, mosquito species diversity and humidity levels. Texas earned a score of 78.01, trailing only Florida and Louisiana.
The study found Texas has the highest mosquito species diversity in the nation with 85 species. Researchers say that allows mosquitoes to thrive across a wide range of environments, from humid East Texas to drier central regions and the Gulf Coast.
Despite receiving just 2.7 inches of average summer rainfall, Texas maintains mosquito-friendly conditions due to high temperatures averaging 81.1 degrees during the summer months. Humidity levels averaging 66.3% also contribute to mosquito survival, particularly in eastern and coastal areas of the state.
Florida ranked first with a score of 96.82, followed by Louisiana at 86.90. Alabama and Georgia rounded out the top five.
Researchers said Texas’ combination of climate diversity and record species variety allows mosquito populations to remain widespread even when weather conditions vary significantly across the state.
The data was compiled using information from the National Centers for Environmental Information.
