TEXAS (TXAN 24) — A new national study has placed Texas in the top 10 states with the deadliest roads for pedestrians after dark.

Conducted by Suzuki Law Offices, the study analyzed fatal night-time pedestrian crash data from 2019 to 2023 using information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Texas ranks 10th in the U.S., averaging 2.11 night-time pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents—well above the national average of 1.43.

The Lone Star State reported an average of 624.8 night-time pedestrian fatalities per year, peaking in 2022 with 686 deaths, and seeing the lowest number in 2020 with 539 deaths.

A spokesperson for Suzuki Law Offices called the data “deeply concerning,” adding:

“Each night-time pedestrian death is a heartbreaking event that shatters families and impacts entire communities. These losses often result in emotional devastation, unexpected medical costs, and financial instability for those left behind.”

The report recommends that reducing these tragedies will require greater investments in safer road infrastructure, such as enhanced street lighting and clearer crosswalks, alongside stronger DUI enforcement and public safety outreach.

Texas joins other high-ranking states like New Mexico, Florida, and Arizona, all struggling with rising after-dark pedestrian dangers.
