ROCKWALL, Texas (TXAN 24) — A new report evaluating the physical toll on college football programs has placed two Texas Big 12 schools in the spotlight ahead of the 2026 season.

According to RotoWire’s 2026 Injury Risk Index, the TCU Horned Frogs and Houston Cougars both ranked among the top 25 most injury-prone Power Four teams in the nation.

The index scores all 68 Power Four programs on a scale from 0 to 100 by weighing four key factors: current roster injuries entering the season, 2026 travel load, overall roster age, and playing surface exposure to artificial turf.

TCU came in at No. 20 overall with an Injury Risk Index score of 42.0. Further down the board, the Houston Cougars tied with Big Ten side Rutgers at No. 24 with a 40.6 risk index score.

Both Texas programs face distinct physical demands this fall, with roster depth and travel schedules playing critical roles in their overall exposure.

RotoWire emphasizes that the index measures structural exposure rather than guaranteeing specific injuries. Across the country, Washington sat at the top of the risk index at 69.2, while Tennessee clocked in as the safest Power Four roster with a score of 7.7.

For Lone Star State football fans, the takeaway is clear: as TCU and Houston navigate a grueling Big 12 slate, keeping key starters healthy and utilizing deep rotation players will be just as vital as playbook execution.
