AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — Texas politics is heading into a defining national contest as state Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico prepare for a U.S. Senate faceoff that is already drawing national attention.

Ken Paxton enters the race with strong backing from the state’s conservative base, leaning heavily on his record of legal battles involving immigration, election law, and education policy. His campaign is expected to center on border security, religious liberty in schools, and opposition to federal oversight.

On the Democratic side, James Talarico is positioning himself as a younger, reform-minded alternative focused on public education, healthcare access, and limiting political influence in classrooms. Talarico has built a statewide profile through sharp criticism of recent school-related legislation and his emphasis on constitutional separation between church and state.

The matchup sets up one of the most ideologically charged Senate races in the country, with both candidates already drawing national fundraising and media attention. Analysts say turnout in suburban counties and fast-growing metro areas like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin will likely determine the outcome.

Early polling has not yet been released, but both campaigns are expected to aggressively define the other in the opening months of the race.

With Texas continuing to shift as a national political battleground, the Paxton–Talarico contest is shaping up as a referendum on the state’s political identity heading into the next decade.
