Special Needs Inmate Allegedly Tased at Cherokee County Jail, Details Under Review

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (TXAN 24) —

A special needs inmate housed at the Cherokee County Jail was reportedly tased by detention officers in a recent incident that has sparked concern among advocacy groups and community members.


Initial reports suggest the use-of-force occurred, though full details surrounding the encounter remain limited at this time. TXAN 24 News is working to confirm the identity of the inmate, the circumstances that led to the deployment of a taser and the authorization of the taser.


Sources familiar with the incident claim the individual involved may have been experiencing a mental or emotional health episode at the time. It is currently unclear whether medical personnel were on site or if de-escalation protocols were attempted prior to the use of force.
