CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas (TXAN 24) — Former Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell was laid to rest Friday at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Rusk, remembered by many as a dedicated public servant who left a lasting impact on both the community and the department he led.
But behind the scenes, TXAN 24 News has learned that current Sheriff Brent Dickson was specifically asked by Campbell’s family not to attend the funeral — a request that insiders say was rooted in how Dickson treated Campbell during the transition of power after the last election.
Despite the family’s request, Sheriff Dickson issued a public statement to the Jacksonville Daily Progress saying, “Sheriff Campbell was a true public servant and devoted his life to his community and family… Sheriff Campbell will be deeply missed, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.”
That quote is now being viewed by some as disingenuous, given the private rift that reportedly existed between the two men.
Sources inside the sheriff’s department say Dickson refused to take advice from Campbell or his outgoing staff after the election — a move that contributed to internal chaos and prompted a wave of resignations from seasoned personnel.
“This isn’t just a funeral snub. It’s a referendum on Sheriff Dickson’s leadership and character,” one law enforcement source told TXAN. “The department hasn’t been the same since he took over.”
Currently, only a district judge can initiate removal proceedings for an elected county official.
