SMITH COUNTY, Texas (TXAN 24) — Smith County leaders are preparing to honor a historic figure in local government.

Commissioners are expected to consider approving a proclamation Tuesday that would designate February 25 as Quincy Beavers Jr. Day in Smith County. The proposed honor comes as the community continues to reflect on the life and legacy of Quincy Beavers Jr., who passed away February 12, 2026.

Judge Beavers made history as the first African American Justice of the Peace in Smith County, serving more than 28 years on the bench. During his tenure, he became known not only for his longevity, but for his steady leadership, commitment to fairness, and dedication to public service across South Tyler and beyond.

If approved during Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting, the designation would coincide with his homegoing service scheduled for Wednesday, February 25 at 1 p.m. at St. James CME Church in Tyler. A public viewing and family visitation will take place Tuesday evening at Stewart Family Funeral Home.

County officials say the proclamation would formally recognize Judge Beavers’ decades of service and lasting impact on the community he faithfully served.
