Six Found Dead Inside Train Boxcar in Laredo; Investigation Underway

LAREDO, Texas (TXAN 24) — Authorities in Laredo are investigating after six people were discovered dead inside a cargo train boxcar near the U.S.-Mexico border, a tragedy that has renewed concerns surrounding migrant smuggling operations in South Texas.

According to local and federal officials, the bodies were found during a rail inspection near a Union Pacific rail yard Monday morning.

Investigators believe the victims may have been trapped inside the railcar for an extended period while temperatures across the region climbed into dangerous levels.

Emergency crews responded to the scene after reports of possible distressed individuals inside the train car. Authorities said additional people were located alive and transported to nearby hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment. Their conditions have not yet been publicly released.

Law enforcement agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations, are assisting in the investigation. Officials are working to identify the victims and determine where the train originated and how the individuals entered the boxcar.
