CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office jail was found in noncompliance with Texas Jail Standards following an inspection in February 2025. The violations included issues with medication distribution, restraint procedures, recreational procedures, and a failure to conduct proper face-to-face observations, particularly at the time of an inmate’s death.
Sheriff Brent Dickson acknowledged the infractions and took full responsibility, stating that the violations stemmed from jailers failing to properly document their duties. In response, disciplinary actions have been taken against multiple employees who failed to meet documentation requirements during their shifts.
Prior to the inspection, Sheriff Dickson reported that a jailer had not completed a proper face-to-face observation at the time of an inmate’s death. That jailer was arrested for tampering with a government document.
“At no time will I tolerate lazy employees who fail to do the job they are paid to do, and if my employees violate the law, they will be held accountable in accordance with state laws,” said Dickson.
The sheriff stated that he is working diligently to bring the facility back into compliance and ensure that all jail staff adhere to proper procedures moving forward.
TXAN 24 News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available.
