AUSTIN, Texas (TXAN 24) — Governor Greg Abbott has called a special legislative session to begin July 21, following his veto of SB-3 — a bill that sought to regulate consumable hemp-derived THC products in Texas.
Abbott’s veto cited enforcement loopholes and a lack of clear age restrictions. Lawmakers are expected to revisit the bill with revised language, likely including stricter packaging, licensing requirements, lab testing standards, and a defined minimum purchase age of 21.
SB-3 passed with bipartisan support during the regular session and was seen by many as the state’s most comprehensive cannabis-related legislation to date.
The special session may also include other unresolved bills related to school safety and property taxes.
TXAN 24 will be covering the session closely from our Austin bureau.
