Writer: Donovan BridgeforthDonovan Bridgeforth

UNITED STATES (TXAN 24) -- Driving without a license is more common than many might think, with millions of Americans hitting the road each year without proper credentials. Whether due to suspensions, revocations, or never having obtained one, the number of unlicensed drivers raises safety and legal concerns across the country.

How Many Americans Are Unlicensed?

Exact figures vary, but studies estimate that around 7 million of U.S. drivers operate vehicles without a valid license. This includes individuals with expired, suspended, or revoked licenses, as well as those who have never obtained one. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), unlicensed drivers are involved in nearly one in five fatal car crashes.

Why Are So Many Driving Unlicensed?

Several factors contribute to the high number of unlicensed drivers:

  • Suspended or Revoked Licenses – Many drivers lose their licenses due to DUIs, excessive traffic violations, or unpaid fines. Some continue driving out of necessity.

  • Immigration Status – Millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are unable to obtain a driver’s license in certain states, leading many to drive without one.

  • Financial Barriers – Some individuals struggle to afford the costs of obtaining a license, including fees for driving schools, tests, and insurance.

  • Lack of Awareness – Some drivers, particularly in rural areas, operate vehicles without ever obtaining proper licensing, sometimes due to generational practices.
