TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — In just the past week, two major crashes involving 18-wheelers have rocked East Texas highways, both on I-20, one of which tragically claimed five lives.

The incidents have local residents questioning whether federal rest and driving standards for commercial truck drivers are being followed.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truck drivers are required to follow strict Hours of Service rules, which include:

  • 11-hour driving limit after 10 consecutive hours off-duty

  • 30-minute rest break after 8 hours of driving

  • 60/70-hour weekly limits depending on operations

With more big rigs crossing East Texas daily, questions are rising: Are current federal standards enough? And more importantly how can the public ensure they being enforced?
