HENDERSON, Texas (TXAN 24) — Comments made by Rainwater, the longtime manager of the late Dallas rapper Mo3, have sparked widespread debate across East Texas after he questioned the level of rap talent coming out of “The East”.
During an appearance on the Political Street Talk podcast hosted by John Ross and Jason Barr, Rainwater blatantly stated that “East Texas has no talent”.
Clips from the interview quickly spread across social media, prompting responses from artists, fans, DJs and media personalities throughout the region.
Several highly touted East Texas rappers have publicly rejected the claim, arguing the region has produced a number of talented independent artists who simply have not received the same industry exposure as performers from larger markets like Dallas, Houston and Austin.
Local radio personalities have also entered the conversation, defending East Texas’ influence on the state’s hip-hop culture and highlighting the area’s growing independent music scene. This controversy has already sparked one East Texas artist to publish a diss track to Rainwater.
The discussion has fueled broader conversations about artist development, music industry support and whether geography continues to play a role in an artist’s ability to break into the mainstream.
As of publication, Rainwater has not publicly retracted his comments, while reactions from East Texas artists and supporters continue to circulate online.
The podcast is a weekly live Facebook show on John Ross’ Facebook to speak on issues related to certain communities in East Texas with a focus on Laneville, Mt. Enterprise and Henderson.
TXAN 24 News has reached out for additional comment from Political Street Talk and will update this story if a response is received.
