TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — Cumberland Academy has announced significant cutbacks due to ongoing funding issues, resulting in the dismissal of 50 staff members across the district. The cuts impact various campuses, with the most significant reductions at the high school level.
According to internal communications, the breakdown of the layoffs includes 20 staff members from the high school, nine from the Lower Elementary, three from the Upper Elementary, and the remaining cuts distributed across the middle school and TLA. Parents and teachers alike are expressing frustration, not only with the layoffs but also with budgetary constraints affecting resources in classrooms.
Reports indicate that Cumberland Academy has suspended funding for electronics and other essential classroom tools. Families were encouraged to purchase headphones earlier in the year, only to be informed later that electronics would not be utilized. Furthermore, teachers cite issues with basic office supplies; the district reportedly hesitated to purchase copier paper and even considered new equipment despite still having a contract on the old copier.
The financial challenges have sparked concerns over district spending priorities, including administrative salaries. As frustrations grow among parents and teachers, the community is left questioning the sustainability of the school’s operations and the district’s ability to provide a supportive educational environment for students.
The district has yet to release an official statement detailing the specific reasons behind the budget shortfall or outlining a plan to address these issues moving forward.
