TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — Kilgore knew the challenge would be steep Friday night, and No. 22-ranked Chapel Hill proved exactly why it’s one of the top teams in the state.
In front of a packed crowd that fell just short of capacity, Chapel Hill (21–2) used an explosive start and a dominant third quarter to pull away from Kilgore (8–5) for a 77–49 win in boys varsity basketball action.
The Bulldogs jumped out early, opening the game on a 10–0 run and setting the tone in the first quarter. Kilgore eventually settled in offensively, but Chapel Hill carried an 18–11 lead after one. Despite the deficit, Kilgore showed fight throughout the night, led by Isiah Mayfield (#0), who provided steady energy and leadership on both ends of the floor.
Kilgore stayed competitive in the second quarter by hustling for second-chance opportunities and refusing to quit on plays. Chapel Hill, however, continued to extend its advantage by capitalizing at the free-throw line, taking a 35–24 lead into halftime.
The game shifted decisively in the third quarter. Marquise Collins II (#3) caught fire from beyond the arc, sparking a scoring surge that stretched the lead to 25 points with just over two minutes remaining in the period. From there, Chapel Hill maintained control and closed the game comfortably.
With the win, Chapel Hill continues its strong run this season, while Kilgore showed resilience against one of the state’s elite programs.
Final: Chapel Hill 77, Kilgore 49
