No. 1 SMU Shuts Out Wake Forest 2-0 In Winston-Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (TXAN 24) — No. 1 SMU men’s soccer remained unbeaten Friday night, defeating Wake Forest 2-0 on the road behind goals from Milton Lopez and Stephan Soghomonian.
The Mustangs improved to 9-0-1 overall and 4-0-0 in ACC play, remaining atop the conference standings with 12 points through four league matches. SMU also recorded its seventh shutout of the season.
After a scoreless opening half, Lopez broke through in the 54th minute. Jaylinn Mitchell created the opportunity after beating his defender on the left wing and sending a cross into the box, where Lopez finished with his left foot.
Wake Forest continued to pressure SMU during a hectic final stretch, but the Mustangs’ defense held firm.
Soghomonian then sealed the victory with seven seconds remaining. Ryan Clanton-Pimentel won possession near the Wake Forest penalty area, drove into the box and crossed to Soghomonian, who finished into the bottom-right corner.
Mitchell recorded his sixth assist of the season and now has eight total goal contributions. Lopez scored his fourth goal of the season and 17th of his SMU career, while Soghomonian’s goal was his sixth this season and 20th as a Mustang.
SMU is now 3-0-1 all-time against Wake Forest and 4-0-0 on the road this season.
The Mustangs return to Dallas next Saturday to host Duke at Washburne Stadium.
