DALLAS, Texas (TXAN 24) — NC State survived a late push from SMU to escape with an 84–83 road win in a tightly contested matchup that came down to the final possessions.
The Wolfpack leaned on guard D. Williams, who led all scorers with 25 points, shooting 8-of-18 from the field and knocking down 3-of-4 free throws. Williams delivered timely buckets throughout the night, keeping NC State steady whenever momentum threatened to swing.
SMU answered behind J. Pierre Jr., who poured in 23 points on an efficient 10-of-20 shooting performance. Pierre carried the offensive load for the Mustangs, attacking the paint and hitting key shots as SMU rallied late.
The game turned into a battle on the glass and in ball movement. Q. Copeland was everywhere for NC State, finishing with 10 rebounds and a game-high 16 assists while committing zero turnovers in 33 minutes of action. His floor leadership proved critical in a one-point finish.
SMU stayed within striking distance thanks to B.J. Edwards, who pulled down nine rebounds, and B. Miller, who added eight assists despite four turnovers.
Both teams traded leads in the final minutes, but NC State’s composure at the line and disciplined execution sealed the win. SMU had a chance in the closing seconds, but the Wolfpack defense held firm to secure the narrow victory.
The loss stings for SMU, but the Mustangs showed grit and competitiveness against a quality NC State squad, signaling they remain a tough out moving forward.
