MEXICO CITY, Mexico (TXAN 24) — Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” has died following a Mexican military operation in western Mexico, marking a major development in the country’s long-running battle against organized crime.

Oseguera led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which U.S. officials have described as one of the most powerful and violent trafficking organizations operating inside Mexico and beyond. The US Drug Enforcement Administration had long identified him as one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers.
According to Mexican authorities, the operation unfolded Sunday in the town of Tapalpa, located in the western state of Jalisco. Multiple branches of Mexico’s military were involved in the coordinated effort.
In the hours following the announcement, violence erupted in several regions, with reports of vehicle burnings and armed clashes believed to be retaliatory actions by cartel operatives.
Oseguera, a former police officer who rose through criminal ranks to build a global trafficking network, had evaded capture for years. His death represents a significant symbolic and operational blow to CJNG, though security analysts caution that cartel structures often remain intact despite leadership losses.
The operation comes as Mexico faces increasing pressure from the United States, including from former President Donald Trump, to demonstrate measurable results in combating drug trafficking and cross-border criminal activity.
Authorities are expected to provide additional details as investigations continue.
