DALLAS, Texa (TXAN 24) — The Lincoln High School community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Roy Hughes, a standout student and athlete, who passed away just days before the start of his senior year.

According to family members, Hughes was found unresponsive at his home Friday evening following a team practice. Emergency responders were called, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is currently underway to determine the official cause of death.

Hughes was widely admired by classmates and coaches for his leadership on and off the field. Known for his dedication in the classroom and his talent in athletics, he had been looking forward to his final year at Lincoln High and pursuing opportunities beyond graduation.

School officials say grief counselors will be available to students and staff as they process the unexpected loss. Plans for a memorial or tribute have not yet been announced.
