JACKSONVILLE, Texas (TXAN 24) — A reported threat involving a firearm during a confrontation at a Jacksonville gas station has raised questions about public safety and how verbal threats are handled under Texas law.
According to information shared with TXAN 24, the incident occurred at the Super 1 Foods gas pumps when an individual says another driver cut in front of them while they were waiting for a pump. After questioning the action, the individual alleges the driver responded with the phrase “It’s white privilege,” followed by “I have a gun and I will use it.”
The individual reports that police were contacted following the incident. According to the caller, they were told the statement was considered “too vague” to pursue further action.
No firearm was displayed, and no physical altercation was reported.
Under Texas law, threatening language involving a weapon may not always meet the legal threshold for criminal charges unless it includes a specific target, an immediate threat, or the visible display of the weapon. However, law enforcement officials routinely caution that introducing a firearm into any verbal dispute significantly increases the risk of violence.
Residents TXAN 24 spoke with say the situation highlights a growing concern about confrontations in public spaces and the uncertainty many feel about when a threat crosses the line into criminal behavior.
TXAN 24 has reached out to Jacksonville police for clarification on departmental policy regarding verbal threats involving firearms and guidance for residents who encounter similar situations.
Anyone who feels threatened in public is encouraged to remove themselves from the area and contact law enforcement immediately.
This is a developing story.
