HOUSTON, Texas (TXAN 24) — University of Houston head coach Willie Fritz has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious George Munger Coach of the Year Award after leading the Cougars to a remarkable turnaround.

Houston is ranked #25 nationally and holds an 8-2 record following back-to-back 4-8 seasons after joining the Big 12 Conference. The Cougars are currently tied for second in Big 12 play at 5-2, thanks to a potent offense and a steady defense that have kept them competitive all season.

Fritz, who previously won the George Munger Award in 2022, is one of 24 semifinalists and one of three coaches from the Big 12, alongside BYU’s Kalani Sitake and Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire. Earlier this year, Fritz was also named to the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List.

The Maxwell Football Club, founded in 1935, honors excellence at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels. Finalists for the 2025 George Munger Award will be announced Dec. 8, with the winner revealed Dec. 30.

Houston fans will be watching closely as Fritz continues to guide the Cougars toward another standout season.
