ROUND ROCK, Texas (TXAN 24) — The Houston Cougars will get an early look at the 2027 season when they take on the Texas Longhorns in a nine-inning exhibition game Saturday, October 3, at Dell Diamond.

First pitch is scheduled for noon, with gates opening at 11 a.m.

The matchup gives Houston an opportunity to face one of the nation’s premier programs while beginning a new chapter under first-year head coach Will Davis, who takes over as the Cougars’ ninth head baseball coach.

Davis arrives in Houston after spending 10 seasons leading Lamar, where he won 289 games and became the second-winningest coach in program history.

Houston finished 24-31 during the 2026 season and had three players earn All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.

The Cougars also enter the exhibition with some recent momentum against Texas. Houston defeated the Longhorns 9-7 on March 24 at Schroeder Park in the teams’ most recent meeting.

Texas holds the all-time advantage, 99-35-2, in 136 meetings dating back to 1958.

The Longhorns are coming off their NCAA-leading 39th College World Series appearance after finishing 46-15 in 2026.

For Houston, the October 3 matchup will provide Davis and his players with an early measuring stick as the Cougars prepare for the 2027 campaign.
