ROCKWALL, Texas (TXAN 24) — The season finale, centers on the Battle of Tumbleton, but the real story is the transformation of Rhaenyra Targaryen. What began as a fight for legitimacy has become something much darker.

Rhaenyra’s decision to execute the High Septon after he refuses to recognize her authority is one of the episode’s defining moments.

Her declaration that she is the “Prince That Was Promised” shows just how far she has moved from the reluctant ruler audiences knew earlier in the series.

Her pursuit of the Iron Throne is no longer simply about justice or inheritance—it is becoming an obsession with power.

Then comes Tumbleton.

The battle is spectacular, violent and deliberately chaotic. Ulf the White’s betrayal turns the battlefield into a nightmare as dragonfire tears through soldiers and civilians alike.

Hightower falls, and the episode makes clear that dragons are not simply weapons of war—they are weapons capable of destroying everything around them.

But perhaps the most devastating moment belongs to Helaena Targaryen. Her death adds another layer of tragedy to a family already drowning in bloodshed. Helaena had remained one of the show’s most sympathetic characters, and her final decision represents another consequence of a war she never wanted.

The finale also brings Aegon and Aemond back into the same orbit, setting up what could become one of the most dangerous confrontations of the final season.

Their fragile alliance gives the Greens another opportunity to challenge Rhaenyra, while Daemon’s growing embrace of violence leaves the future of Team Black equally uncertain.

Season 3 was not perfect. At times, the pacing and shifting storylines made the season feel uneven. But the finale largely fixes that problem by giving the characters real consequences and moving the Dance of the Dragons into an increasingly desperate phase.

The biggest victory of the episode isn’t the spectacle—it’s the character work.

Rhaenyra is changing. Daemon is changing. Aegon is returning. Aemond is regrouping. And Westeros is paying the price.

TXAN 24 News Rating: 8.4/10

The finale leaves House of the Dragon in a much stronger position heading into its fourth and final season. The war is no longer approaching. The war is here.
