NORTH TYLER, Texas (TXAN 24) — The sign, honoring the late Dr. Young — Tyler’s first Black pharmacist — was struck and damaged by a truck near the intersection of Palace and Vance. Witnesses say they saw two men in a pickup truck hit the sign before speeding off. The vehicle did not stop.
Dr. Young was a pillar in the North Tyler community. More than a pharmacist, he was known for providing free medicine to families in need, sponsoring education for local kids, and supporting the growth of Black-owned businesses in East Texas during times when opportunities were few and far between.
“This wasn’t just a sign. It was a reminder of who we are and where we come from,” said Rev. Houston, at the scene.
No arrests have been made. Community members are now calling on the city and police to investigate, and for whoever is responsible to come forward.
