CEDAR PARK, Texas (TXAN 24) — A 20-2 run in the fourth quarter flipped the game on its head Sunday afternoon as the Austin Spurs stormed past the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 130-123, at the H-E-B Center.
Austin came out firing with a 7-0 start, but the Vipers quickly answered behind Daishen Nix and Efe Abogidi to keep things tight early. The Spurs still held a 32-24 lead after one.
RGV found its rhythm in the second quarter, taking its first lead at 46-45 and eventually building a 61-54 halftime advantage behind a strong opening half from Houston Rockets two-way JD Davison, who poured in 16 points in 19 minutes.
The Vipers kept control deep into the third, pushing the margin to nine before Austin clawed back to tie it at 80. RGV responded again, closing the quarter up 98-89.
But the fourth belonged to the Spurs. Trailing by 12 with 6:24 left, Austin caught fire, ripping off a massive 20-2 run and seizing a 125-119 lead they wouldn’t give back.
Davison led RGV with 25 points while Nix added 24. Rockets assignee Jae’Sean Tate made an impressive G League debut with 20 points in 19 minutes.
Austin had seven players in double figures, including a standout 34-point night from Kyle Mangas. Stanley Umude contributed 18, and two-way forward Harrison Ingram delivered a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double.
